Why do we need to address burnout?
Working in the nonprofit space can demand our entire selves. We are often short-staffed, light on resources, and simultaneously dealing with a challenging social and political climate outside of work. The demands of the job can take so much from us that we are left physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausted.
As a result of "burnout," we can experience a lack of motivation to do even the most basic tasks, extreme exhaustion, intense feelings of negativity toward work or life in general, and depression. Once burnout sets in, it is very difficult to reverse. For a company, this manifests as expensive high turnover, dysfunctional work culture, poor outcomes, and low morale.
At TJS, we recognized this widespread problem. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of workers reporting burnout skyrocketed – in fact, a global survey in late 2022 indicated that 40-50 percent of the global workforce reports feeling burned out. For those working in the nonprofit field, the risk of burnout is even higher in our intensifying political climate where challenges to social justice pervade our lives in and outside of work.
We observed colleagues in this field, time and time again, becoming chronically fatigued, bitter, worn down, and disillusioned -- but we believe social justice and direct service work, of all things, should not leave people feeling this way.
How can this Burnout Resilience tool help me?
Sometimes a lot feels out of our control, like a demanding boss, a toxic workplace, or the heavy nature of social services work. But there are many things that are in our control, and this tool is meant to shine a light on what those are.
This is not a measure of how burned out you are -- rather, it measures a person's resilience skills with a resource-rich, customized report to help them repair their personal boundaries as well as their approach to their work.
This tool has been designed around extensive research on burnout and has been vetted by psychology experts with a trauma-informed and culturally-responsive lens. After taking the assessment, you will receive a customized report based on your answers with recommendations on building resilience and making positive adjustments to intercept the underlying causes of burnout.
Do I have to work for a nonprofit to take this?
Anyone can take this assessment. Some of the questions, reading recommendations, and tips are tailored specifically to the nature of nonprofit work environments. However, anyone in human services can benefit from this information, including government workers and healthcare workers.
How much does it cost?
